Becoming A Great Teacher for "Z" Generation

Now a days, teaching is one of the most complicated job. It doesn’t only require the teachers to be able to teach students the concept of material given by the government or their school but they also need to have and implement four pillars of competence such as pedagogic, personality, social, and professional competences. There are many education bachelor who teach but still complaining about the behavior of their students, lack of media ability, etc. That condition is one of the fact that not every teacher are having the four competencies needed. By having the four competences, teacher are expected to handle their students and their obligation easier. If only teachers has those 4 competencies, they will be great teachers for our students. Having the four competencies is one of the key for all teachers to face all challenges. One of the biggest challenge today is our students, it is because they are growing very fast with their digital tools. The fact that elementary until college students today are “Z” generation and they are “digital native” however bring lots of differences on the way teachers should teach and handle the class. Teacher need to consider that their students have different need and challenge from them. They cannot teach their students the way they were taught 20 years ago, the material they need to learn will also different from what the previous generation need to learn. Teachers with a good pedagogic, personality, social, and professional competency will make themselves ready for all the changes. They will be pleasured using the technology in their classroom to make everything fast and let the students grab the knowledge faster and broader. They will not judge the students with a bad judgment easily and will motivate them to learn beyond the material. “Z” Generation Generation Z refers to the generation that was born between 1995-2010 following millennial generation. They express themselves with their own style, tend to travel more, demand on 24 hours internet access, master of social media and all technology. This generation is “digital native” generation since they have born in the era of high technology and because of that they use technology differently. They also learn using different way from the previous generation. They like to learn from video and anything that has graphic in it. For them paper with lots of alphabet in it is bored to read, as the replacement they learn about a topic or lesson they want from video, comic or podcast. “Z” generation grew up with diverse family structures, more varied mix of ethnic groups and blurred gender roles. It is very common to them to see different ethnic walk together or even they born from parents with different religion or ethnic. Diversity is not a big issue for “Z” generation since there is no gap between any religion, ethnic, and gender in digital platform. They learn how to accept diversity from the social media, and it bring a good impact on their tolerance for their real life. As digital natives, they consider the social media influencers and content creator as their role model since most of their time is spent for social media. Some “Z” generation from low income family or rural area who haven’t been taught to use social media wisely, tend to be inspired by influencer with a bad habit. Ria Ricis, Atha Halintar, Young lex, are three of content creator who inspiring the low income and rural area students the most. The language and attitude they show in their content are followed by most of students. While students in big family or come from middle and high income family tend to be inspired by a better influencer like Fathia Izzati, Arif Muhammad, and Rachel Venya. They tend to follow them because they have good achievement and experiences. They learn from those good influencer how to build business, get scholarship, or use social media to get a better job. Their life takes place online and it make them become multi-tasking. They could have meeting while having vacation with their family, do grocery shopping while having course, and many other things they can do in the same time. They also more independent compared with previous generation. Digital platform help them a lot to answer any question or demand they have. They do not need teacher to teach them how to speak English well, many application and digital platform offer to teach them for free. Some of “Z” generation are even do not ask pocket money from their parents since they could get money from social media or digital platform they work in. Great Teacher Many people believe that one of the most important factor in education is the quality of teacher. The greater the teacher are, the better result students will have. Najla Shihab in her speech for “Semua Murid, Semua Guru” channel said that “Everyone can be a teacher but not everyone can teach”. According to oxford dictionary, Teaching means give somebody knowledge, skill, etc. while teacher means person who teaches, especially in the school. We can say a doctor who gave us information about our illness and how to cure it as a teacher because he gave us knowledge about our ill. Teach is something beyond giving knowledge and skill, we need to grow good behavior and mindset through the lesson we bring to our classroom. The method, media and tools, learning activity, and assignment that we choose should encourage students to have good behavior and mindset. That is why preparing our teaching and learning process use lesson plan is truly important. It will guide and remind us to our goal and how to reach it. As the writer wrote before, teacher need to have four competences. She/he need to have pedagogic, personality, social, and professional competences. These four competencies require the teacher to have broad knowledge of subject matter, curriculum and its standard; enthusiasm, a caring attitude, and love of learning; knowledge of discipline and classroom management technique; and a desire to make a difference in their students’ living. With those qualities, someone can be a qualified and great teacher for their students and institution. These qualification are not easy, so that not every teachers can easily be a great teacher. The first competency to be a qualified teacher is pedagogic. This competency is needed to read the characteristic of students, through this, teacher can be easily understand how to deal with them, what they really need to face challenges in the few years ahead, their background and interest from each students in the class. Those things are important to build a good class environment. This competency will also lead teacher to deal with student’s characteristic along with the reason why students behave inappropriately. Pedagogy is also deal with teaching strategy, method, and teacher’s action toward the theory about teaching and learning process. The second competency is personality. Having good personality as the one who become an example for their students is a must. Basically, the personality is defined as the way to interact with the circumstance and others. This means, teacher need to know how to behave with their partners and all the duties. The fast growth of social media affect most of the student’s behavior. Words used by our students today are the words they listen mostly from youtube and podcast, the way they express them self is also inspired by social media influencer, and the way they react to something is learnt from the internet since parents today are busy with their job. So, as one of the person who spent most of time with students, teacher play an important role to shape student’s personality. The third is social competency. This competency builds a capacity how to deal with social things, teachers must be sensitive to problem and issues around the world and students. Since teacher cannot work alone to control students’ activity at school, we need other individual around the school and society to encourge students to study and learn new things. Social competence is also reflect the capacity of teacher to take another perspective or idea concerning a situation. For instance, in class discussion teacher can show to students how to react on an issue about “Hizbu Tahrir”, teacher can show the perspective from its follower, government, and some people. Teacher also can invite environmental influencer or community to teach and show how to deal with garbage. The last is professional competency. This competency is related to a profession or any person who deal with their job or profession. Teacher need to understand their professionalism as the particular knowledge and skills to perform our specific role within our profession. We need to understand the curriculum and its stuff used in our institution. These four competencies are strongly needed to be a great teacher for our students. It is absolutely required an open minded personality to accept all changes brought by the era. The best teachers are not created to be a passive personality but they have to become energetic persons to facilitate, motivate, and educate their students to be the agent of change. Teaching “Z” Generation Teaching “Z” generation will bring lots of challenges for the teacher. Teachers are expected to embrace personal devices, personalize the student’s learning, give an online assignment or exam, encourage students to make a product or services in the end of the academic year. Embrace personal devices. After years of fighting with “Millennials’ digital distraction”, it’s time to shift perceptions of the smartphones and the students who use them. Generation Z went through high school organizing, delegating and even collaborating on group assignments via online video chat, each working from their own device at home. For them, learning doesn’t happen in libraries or classroom. Libraries and classroom are only for life formality. Digital technology is already the infrastructure of their learning, and it needs to become the infrastructure of the classroom as well. In most of school, internet access, LCD, Projector, and school personal application are used to catch up with the Z generatio. Personalize their learning doesn’t mean designing a tailored approach for every student. Mostly, it means targeting it to the group by assessing their progress. Formative assessment, especially when collected digitally, can give the institution a strong sense of a classroom’s comprehension of the course material. Instructors can review challenging concepts, or dig deeper into topics that clearly boost enthusiasm. Give online assignment and exam is one of the common things can be found in most of schools at big cities in Indonesia. Schoology, Kahoot, Woka, Cbtedu, are some platform used for it. English teachers just need to upload literacy books for their students and ask them to finish it in a semester using Schoology. They can see the progress of their students’ reading from the platform and assess them to make summary or answer some questions. Teachers are also can simply upload the exam questions and set the time for exam by Woka and students can access it whenever they are; by using the application, teacher can check the answer everywhere without bringing lots of paper or just set up automatic exam checker to receive the exam’s score. Conclusion Teaching “Z” generation will bring lots of challenges for the teacher. Teachers are expected to embrace personal devices, personalize the student’s learning, give an online assignment or exam, encourage students to make a product or services in the end of the academic year Teachers with a good pedagogic, personality, social, and professional competency will make themselves ready for all the changes. They will be pleasured using the technology in their classroom to make everything fast and let the students grab the knowledge faster and broader. They will not judge the students with a bad judgment easily and will motivate them to learn beyond the material. It is absolutely required an open minded personality to accept all changes brought by the era. The best teachers are not created to be a passive personality but they have to become energetic persons to facilitate, motivate, and educate their students to be the agent of change.
